Biography

Mexiclan is a latin rap duo composed of Sem Vargas and Marco Antonio Muñoz. Their first self-titled album was released by Univision Records on January 13, 2004, and that same year the album was charted on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart peaking at number 51. Vargas began singing at age 6 in the church where his father was a pastor. He also learned to play various instruments and, at 21, joined Los Chavalos del Norte. Munoz grew up listening to his father's local norteño group while buying rap records from the Fat Boys, NWA, Easy-E, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, DJ Quick and others. "Probably because people didn't think it was real music," said Sem "Leon" Vargas, "They probably thought it was just ruido (noise). I know, for sure, there's been people that have been trying to do this for a long time, more than 10 years probably. "There's also music in urban and hip-hop styles, and youngsters also like the Mexican music, so we add everything together." Mexiclan uses norteño rhythms and the accordion to add melodic zing to what is essentially hard-core rap. "We listen to Mexican music and hip-hop. So why not add them together?" Vargas, though, said combining the various styles is driven by admiration. "So we really try to show them that we really do respect norteño and Mexican music with songs like Me Siento Bien and Mi Papá Lloraba." https://www.chron.com/entertainment/music/article/Urban-regional-sound-pays-off-for-Mexiclan-1966419.php https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexiclan
