Biography

Bombay Dub Orchestra are not from Bombay, nor are they really a dub act, either, or even an actual orchestra, but the name has been used for the electro-Indian, ambient, chill-out soundscapes and melodies created by British composers and producers Garry Hughes and Andrew T. Mackay, along with mixing engineer Damon Sood. Built around electro beats and Indian instruments, then layered with sweetly flowing string orchestration, the team produces well-crafted and arranged chill-out melodies that feel like they've wandered in from the classical score of a Bollywood movie, only by way of Jamaica; a sort of sunny version of late-night zone-out-and-float-downstream music. Bombay Dub Orchestra released a self-titled debut album in 2006 on Six Degrees Records, with a second album, 3 Cities, featuring some 75 musicians, following two years later in 2008, again on Six Degrees. Tales from the Grand Bazaar, recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, London, Bombay, Istanbul, L.A. and New York, and featuring Sly & Robbie, Asad Khan, and Soumik Datta, appeared in the fall of 2013. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
