Biography

Studying music since he was five, Marcos Leite debuted professionally in choir and vocal music in 1967; having created several choirs, of which the most important is the Garganta Profunda. As an arranger, he incorporated the advanced harmonic language developed by bossa nova and MPB into the vocal parts. Leite also innovated in the scenic direction, infusing a lighter approach to the previously solemn choir performances. Having founded in 1985 the vocal group Garganta Profunda and, until his demise, its director, Leite promoted through the group a mix of music and theater which proved to be influential. He also produced two LPs and three CDs recorded by the group, along with the live recorded LP Aos Vivos by Cobra Coral and a CD by the Coral Furb (Blumenau, Santa Catarina). Having worked on recordings with Caetano Veloso, Edu Lobo, Paulo Moura, and other artists, Leite arranged Chico Buarque's musical Suburbano Coração, participated in the album and show Yes, Nós Temos Braguinha (1997), and co-directed (with Egberto Gismonti) the music of the play A Bandeira de Cinco Mil-Réis. Having created and directed the Orquestra de Vozes de Meninos de Rua (Voice Orchestra of Streetboys), with 1,200 voices, Leite also developed an intense activity as a professor, at the Festival de Londrina (Paraná), Oficinas de Música de Curitiba (Music Workshops of Curitiba, Paraná), Festival de Música Instrumental de Ouro Preto (Instrumental Music Festivals of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais), and the Painéis Funarte de Regência Coral (Funarte Panels of Choir Conduction). ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
