Frege is a quartet of Mexican musicians formed in 2014 by Rafael Durand, Victor De la Garza, Sebastian Garrido, and Jorge Mestre. The group combines the rich harmonic content of some jazz styles with hip hop rhythms and in-depth production. They have collaborated with artists such as La Chica, Tessa Ia, Simon Balthazar (Fanfarlo, Hieronymous), and Ferdinand González (Guadaloops, Bicho Blanco). Bleak is the new single by the band. It was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic entirely from the band members’ homes in collaboration with Spanish bass player Anton Serrats. It’s an isolation anecdote, a reflection on resignation and the yearning for uncertain but imminent liberation. Hip hop rhythms collide with modulations and instrumental solos that define the new sound of Frege. This release comes with a video clip which was also created during isolation. Frege has performed at venues such as Vive Cuervo Salón, Bar Oriente, Departamento, and 316 Centro in Mexico City, and at Webster Hall, Rockwood Music Hall, and Bowery Electric in New York City.
