Biography

British Asian vocalist Manjeet Kondal (1950-2023) was the front man of celebrated late 80s UK bhangra act Holle Holle. Along with long time collaborator and influential producer Deepak Khazanchi, Kondal helped usher in a new electronic era in bhangra that would fuse elements of house music and dub with traditional Punjabi bhangra instruments, melodies and hooks. Kondal made his start in bhangra in 1980 as the founding member and dholak player with the legendary band Alaap, one of the early pioneers of UK bhangra music, and whose first three albums Khazanchi produced. In 1983 Kondal decided to go solo as a vocalist and asked Khazanchi to produce music for his album. Their first and eponymously titled album ‘Holle Holle’ (1986) was groundbreaking with the title track Holle Holle becoming a household hit and wining best song of the year at the UK Asian Pop Awards. The album featured lesser known but nonetheless groundbreaking cuts, including Ishkaan De Mamle, a pounding bhangra banger fusing elements of proto-techno (and the object of several new remixes by Mr. Scruff). Kondal and Khazanchi would collaborate on two more bhangra albums, ‘Wicked And Wild’ (1987) and ‘Let’s Party’ (1993). Manjeet Kondal passed away on 27th November 2023.
