Souls – biography 1991-1997 2016 - ? Souls were formed in 1991 by the Scanians Cecilia Nordlund (vocals and guitar), Andreas Catjar (previously Danielsson - guitar) and Johan Karlsson (bass). In a time when the Swedish indie pop was well-groomed and anglophile, Souls raw, hard and cocky music entered like "a giant dick far up the ass of indie pop", as Cecilia put it in an interview. Their debut album "Tjitchischtsiy (Sudêk)" was produced by the legendary Steve Albini and was released in 1994, when the band had moved to Gothenburg. Souls were described as a powerful live band with oversteered guitars, dynamic backing and wistful melodies. But most of all they were a cocky band that wreaked as much havoc as they possibly could. The second album "Bird Fish or Inbetween" was released in 1996 (produced by Steve Albini and Nille Perned), and the band set off on a long US tour, supporting BUSH, Veruca Salt and Jesus Lizards. Souls broke up after the tour, for personal reasons, and made their last gig at Harry's in Gothenburg on September 10, 1997. Souls had a few drummers; Mikael Ohlsson and Tony Fideke played in the band before they were signed, Bo Peter Andersson played on the first and second albums, and after he left the band Lars-Erik Grimelund finished the recording of the second album and joined the US tour in 1997. When the band now reunites the drums are being played by Markku Hildén from Cult of Luna, Logh and Barrens.
