Biography

A member of popular Nordic band Groupa from 1982 until 1987, Leif Stinnerbom is a master of the Varmland dance music tradition. Although he initially played Swedish latfiol, a predecessor of the Hardanger fiddle with two understrings, he switched to a viola d'amour style instrument with five playing strings and five resonance strings after forming Groupa with long-time friend and fiddler Mats Eden. Pulled together in the early 1970s by their mutual interest in musical roots, Stinnerbom and Eden collected many songs from farmer and musician Oskar Andersson (1898-1986). In the late '70s they released an album of Varmland's traditional folk songs. Stinnerbom's musical legacy has been inherited by his son, Magnus Stinnerbom, who performs in a duo, Harv, with Daniel Sarden-Warg, and with Nordic folk group Hedningarna. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
