Biography

This early music enthusiast and performer began his musical education with the study of violin, viola, and composition with A. Casagrande and M. Perrucci at the Institute G.B. Pergolesi in Ancona and at the Conservatorio G. Rossini in Pesaro from 1971 to 1981. In 1982, Ambrosini and P. Rabanser founded the early music Ensemble Oni Wytars. Ambrosini also joined the Marchigiana Philarmonica Orchestra and has played with various other chamber orchestras, as well as early music, Baroque, and contemporary music ensembles. Since 1990, Ambrosini has been a soloist on the fidel and nyckelharpa with the well-known Clemencic Consort in Vienna, and since 1991 he has been the artistic director of the Katharco Early Music Consort. In 1994, he was the nyckelharpa soloist of the Baroque ensemble LAD for the Moscow Philarmonic. Ambrosini has also performed with El Trobadors (Spain), the Ensemble Unicorn, the Accentus Ensemble, Armonico Tributo Austria, and Michael Riessler's Tentett (France/Germany). Ambrosini's own compositions have included music for the theater, for example his Kaiserkrönung (Coronation of the King) for the occasion of the 1,200-year celebration of the founding of the city of Frankfurt, and music for the staging of La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy) in 1995. He composed Il ritorno di Marco Polo (The Return of Marco Polo) for the Alte Oper (Old Opera) in Frankfurt and it featured German percussionist Katharina Dustmann. In 1999, he premiered Zwischen Himmel und Hölle (Between Heaven and Hell) at the Maschinenhalle Zweckel in Gladbeck, Germany. The composition misch:lagen (mix:rest) (2000), a collaboration with Katharina Dustmann, was premiered in Essen at the Kokerei Zollverein (Carbonization Customs Union). He has toured with his own compositions and groups, as well as with other ensembles throughout Europe and the U.K., the Middle East, and Peru. Ambrosini has also been involved in contemporary jazz music, performing and recording since 1993 with Valentin Clastrier and Michael Riessler. In 1996, Ambrosini worked with Swedish Radio as a soloist and composer for the Jazz Nordic Meeting. On the scholarly side, Ambrosini has authored a textbook on early music entitled Einführung in die mittelalterliche Musik (Introduction to Music of the Middle Ages, 1992). In 1997, he was named musical director of the Renaissance-Fest in the castle of Lemgo, Germany.
