Biography

Famous Brazilian poet. Jaime Ovalle wrote songs for two of Bandeira's poems that became all-time classics: the modinhas "Azulão" and "Modinha." Ary Barroso put the music, a fado, in his "Portugal, Meu Avozinho," but the song was never recorded. Some of his poems had music by the erudite composers Heitor Villa-Lobos, Francisco Mignone, and Camargo Guarnieri. He published the first poetry book in 1917, A Cinza Das Horas, which was the precursor of the Brazilian modernism. Carnaval (1919), confirmed his pioneering character. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
