As a boundary-breaking DJ, producer, vocalist, and performer, Dis Fig's art is intense, challenging, and cathartic. First known for her exploratory mixes and mashups, she moved further away from the dancefloor with her own productions, including Purge, her 2019 debut album. She has also released striking collaborations with the Bug (In Blue, 2020) and the Body (Orchards of a Futile Heaven, 2024). New Jersey-born, Berlin-based Dis Fig (Felicia Chen) first gained attention as a DJ, with lauded mixes for Classical Trax, Discwoman, Boiler Room, and others, in addition to her bootleg mashups. Her unpredictable mixes and edits incorporated grime, bass music, and trap as well as industrial, noise, and drone. In 2018, PTP released her 13-minute piece "Excerpt from an Atypical Brain Damage," written for a piece by performance artist Tianzhuo Chen; Dis Fig later became part of Chen's performance art series TRANCE. Dis Fig's full-length debut, Purge, appeared in 2019. Far less club-oriented than her previous mixes, the album explores the artist's vulnerability through post-industrial distortion and modern classical arrangements. Dis Fig then collaborated with the Bug on the captivating experimental dub album In Blue, issued by Hyperdub in 2020. Orchards of a Futile Heaven, a harrowing joint effort with the Body, was released by Thrill Jockey in 2024. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
