Hennie Bekker is an award-winning, multi-platinum-selling musician, master composer and arranger whose international career spans decades, cultures, generations and genres. Bekker was born in a copper mining camp in Zambia, ten miles south of the Congo border. He spent the first eleven years of his life discovering the magical sounds of African drummers answering each other between mining camps at sundown, the smell of the earth after a rainfall, and the sounds of the wilderness that bordered the edge of his backyard. In later years, Bekker experienced the wonders of the bushveld as he travelled 1000 miles of wilderness by motorcycle, from the copper belt in Zambia to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe via the Victoria Falls (The Smoke That Thunders). On one occasion, the journey brought him so close to the wild that he was forced to wait a comfortable distance from a herd of elephants crossing the road. Bekker’s travels eventually took him to Kenya, the Congo and then to South Africa where he established himself as a leading composer, producer and arranger. Since moving to Canada in the late 80s, Bekker has composed, produced and arranged close to sixty albums, many of which have garnered Gold, Platinum and even quadruple platinum album sales. He is best known for his New Age sound on Dan Gibson’s Solitudes – Exploring Nature with Music series, and his own Kaleidoscopes, African Tapestries, and Hennie Bekker’s Tranquility album series.
