Biography

Nina Walsh is active in many facets of dance and alternative music, as a producer, singer/songwriter, engineer, and label owner. A longtime associate of Andrew Weatherall, she co-ran the Sabres of Paradise and Sabrettes labels during the 1990s, while making breakbeat techno with Lol Hammond (Drum Club) as the duo Slab. She also worked with the Orb and Primal Scream, and founded the mysterious C-Pij label, releasing an experimental album as Obscura in 2001. Memo's, a solo album of electronic folk songs, appeared in 2005, and Walsh collaborated with the Orb's Dr. Alex Paterson as Rootmasters in 2007. Walsh resumed working with Weatherall as the Woodleigh Research Facility, creating dubby electro and acid techno from 2013 until Weatherall's passing in 2020. Walsh has continued the Woodleigh Research Facility as a solo project, and her final album with Weatherall, Phonox Nights, was released in 2023. Walsh started her career in the music industry following the late-'80s explosion of acid house. She was in charge of club promotions at London Records, and after meeting Andrew Weatherall, she helped run Sabres of Paradise, and set up sister label Sabrettes. She released a 1994 single with Kris Needs as the Rabettes, and formed Slab with Lol Hammond of Drum Club. They signed to Hydrogen Dukebox and released two albums of cheeky breakbeat and techno tracks, Freeky Speed and Ripsnorter. Walsh worked with the Orb, co-writing and singing on two songs for the album Cydonia, which was finally released in 2001 after numerous delays. By this point, Walsh had founded a label called C-Pij, which released several 7" singles without artist credits. These featured tracks by Walsh as well as Alec Empire, Spring Heel Jack, and Two Lone Swordsmen. The label's first album, an experimental collage produced by Walsh under the name Obscura, titled Wah/Fuzz/Swell, was released in 2001. Walsh issued the electronic singer/songwriter album Memo's on the label in 2005, and a revised edition titled Bright Lights and Filthy Nights appeared several years later on Malicious Damage. The same label also released Push Once, an EP Walsh produced with the Orb's Dr. Alex Paterson as Rootmasters. During the 2010s, Walsh engineered albums by Warpaint, Fuck Buttons, and Pete Molinari. Along with Weatherall, she wrote and produced music for the book Unreal City by writer and filmmaker Michael Smith. Walsh and Weatherall formed experimental techno project the Woodleigh Research Facility in 2013, and their debut album, The Phoenix Suburb (And Other Stories), appeared in 2015. Walsh also formed Fireflies with Franck Alba, releasing the 7" single "Freeze Me" in 2015. Following Weatherall's death in 2020, Walsh formed the label Facility4 and continued releasing previously recorded WRF duo efforts, as well as further recordings by Walsh solo. She also released a few other projects, including binaural beats compositions and Sweet Droog, a 2023 EP recorded as a tribute to her dog, who had passed away a few years earlier. Phonox Nights, the last WRF release recorded with Weatherall, appeared in 2023. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
