Ruby Hughes is a Welsh soprano, & the daughter of renowned ceramicist Elizabeth Fritsch. Hughes attended London's Guildhall School of Music as a cellist, & after graduation, studied voice at the Hochschule für Musik & Theater in Munich, where earned her diploma in concert & song. Hughes then received a full scholarship to study on the Royal Colleg of Music’s opera program with Lillian Watson graduating in 2009. She became a BBC New Generation Artist and won the first prize and audience prize at the 2009 London Handel Singing Competition. Hughes has sung major operatic roles with English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Theater an der Wien, Aix en Provence festival, Garsington Opera, the Opera Group, and Music Theatre Wales. As a concert artist, she has performed with conductors including Laurence Cummings, Philippe Herreweghe, Juanjo Mena, Marc Minkowski, Hervé Niquet, Gianandrea Noseda, Thomas Søndergård, John Storgårds, and Takuo Yuasa, among others. Hughes has appeared with such ensembles as Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin, Les Arts Florissants, the Britten Sinfonia, Le Concert Spirituel, the London Mozart Players, the Manchester Camerata, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. In recital, Hughes has sung with pianists Julius Drake&Joseph Middleton. She is an avid supporter of contemporary music
