Melissa Ferrick, a genre-defying artist with a 30-year career, blends indie, alternative, folk, and punk in her music. Known for her raw, witty lyrics and emotional depth, she signed with Kill Rock Stars (KRS) in 2023, aligning with the label's commitment to authentic storytelling. To mark the 25th anniversary of her acclaimed album Everything I Need, Ferrick is re-recording it with just her guitar, aiming to capture the essence of her live performances. The re-release, out on October 11, 2024, will include bonus tracks like "Black Dress" and a Tegan and Sara cover. As an openly queer artist since 1995, Ferrick has challenged industry norms and paved the way for others. She founded Drive Music Agency to support new indie acts and teaches music business and creativity at Northeastern University. Previously, she was an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music and holds an Ed.M. from Harvard. Ferrick began her musical journey in Ipswich, Massachusetts, studying various instruments and performing at local venues. Her breakthrough came in 1991, opening for Morrissey, leading to a tour and a major label deal with Atlantic Records. Her debut album Massive Blur (1993) and subsequent releases with indie labels solidified her reputation. Over her career, Ferrick has released eighteen albums and performed with diverse artists, continuing to influence and challenge musical conventions.
