Strangelove were an English alternative rock band formed in Bristol in 1991 comprising singer Patrick Duff, guitarists Alex Lee & Julian Poole, bassist Joe Allen & John Langley on drums. They released three critically acclaimed albums Time For The Rest Of Your Life (1993), Love And Other Demons (1996) & Strangelove (1997) on Food EMI Records & they had two top 40 hit singles with Beautiful Alone (1996) & The Greatest Show On Earth (1997) before disbanding in 1998. They released their first EP Visionary in Oct 1992 on Sermon Records which made 'single of the week' in Melody Maker & two John Peel sessions followed for The BBC soon after. A second EP, Hysteria Unknown, in Feb 1993 earned them a support tour with Radiohead who described Strangelove as "inspirational". Strangelove released their first album, Time for the Rest of Your Life in Aug 1994 on Food Records to widespread critical acclaim & made numerous best of 1994 polls. Their second album Love And Other Demons was released on 17 June 1996 & Beautiful Alone went to 35 in the UK Singles Chart. The album represented Strangelove’s artistic zenith thus far but sounded so at odds with the mid-nineties Britpop scene that it struggled commercially. A third, eponymously titled album was released 6 October 1997 & yielded another UK Top 40 single, The Greatest Show On Earth & sell-out shows at the London Astoria & Shepherds Bush Empire. Seemingly on the point of a major breakthrough, Strangelove split up on 20 April 1998.
