Biography

The name Will Sessions was born as a producer alias of trumpeter Sam Beaubien. After sharpening his keyboard skills and learning writing and arrangement from the accomplished David Van De Pitte (who arranged for countless Motown recordings including Marvin Gaye’s album What’s Going On) at Wayne State University, he decided to start a band. With classmates Tim Shellaberger (bass) and Bryan Arnold (drums) along with recruits Ryan Gimpert (guitar) and Eric Kacir (Percussion), the band was complete. They helped to develop a nascent monthly funk music party called Motor City Funk Night, and years later, the party has grown into one of the staples of the Detroit scene. After cutting their teeth as the house band at Motor City Funk Night parties, the band has gone on to release a series of singles on the FNR label, as well as LPs like the instant-classic ‘Elmatic,’ ‘Kindred,’ ‘Mixtakes’ video/album series, and their debut ‘Deluxe’ featuring all original material. Now, they've established themselves as one of Detroit’s must-see live bands, with a work ethic and a varied musical output that reflects their city’s roots. In addition to their own work, the group is known for high-profile collaborations with the likes of Mayer Hawthorne, Slum Village, Elzhi, Black Milk, Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, Eminem and Slaughter House, KRS-One, Danny Brown, DJ Dez/Andrez, Jeremy Ellis, Wendell Harrison, Toots & the Maytals, and Griz.
