Biography

Revolution Void is the electronic jazz music project of 35-year-old Jonah Dempcy. Combining cinematic soundscapes and gritty experimentalism with dancefloor-friendly beats and jazz solos, Dempcy’s sound is equally at home in posh European nightclubs as it is at 2 AM Chicago warehouse parties. Born in 1983 in Boston, Dempcy spent his formative years in Northern California. At age 14, his music was discovered by Marco Collins and played on 107.7 The End. Soon after, KEXP and other radio stations followed suit, and he signed to Koyote Records in the UK. As a teenager, Dempcy played hundreds of shows across the US and released CDs and vinyl records as Revolution Void. He collaborated with musicians such as Matthew Garrison and Seamus Blake, and mentored under Wayne Horvitz. He spent two years working with Michael Shrieve as an engineer and producer, recording with such musicians as Elvin Jones, Dave Holland, and Bill Frisell. Over the years, the sound of Revolution Void has remained true to its avant-garde roots, more recently drawing comparisons to Steven Ellison, better known as Flying Lotus, who was born a mere week later than Dempcy in the same year. The two artists have similar musical touchstones growing up as teenagers in the 90s heydey of electronic dance and downtempo music, and influences from videogame and film soundtracks.
