Biography

b. Noel Williams, c.1945, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. King Sporty was one of the first DJs to record with Coxsone Dodd at Studio One, where he chanted over Delroy Wilson’s ‘Feel Good All Over’ and ‘I’m Not A King’, the latter of which enjoyed an enormous revival through Cocoa Tea’s 1997 remake of the song. King Sporty also provided the DJ version of the Heptones’ classic ‘Choice Of Music’, which has since become a much sought-after collector’s item. By the early 70s King Sporty had relocated to Miami where he continued to be involved in the music. He linked up with the TK organization, working with KC And The Sunshine Band, who in 1975 played on sessions for King Sporty’s production of The Chosen Few In Miami. His songwriting skills were to prove advantageous when Bob Marley recorded ‘Buffalo Soldier’, a posthumous hit; King Sporty was involved in the original production. As well as producing, King Sporty continued to perform in Florida where in 1983, backed by the Ex-tras he enjoyed the disco hits ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ and ‘Meet Me At The Disco’, the latter of which led to an album of the same name. With the Ex-tras he also released ‘(The) Boomerang’, ‘Haven’t Been Funked Enough’ and ‘I Can’t Keep Still’. By the early 90s the disco-orientated albums were marketed by Receiver who also controlled Trojan Records’ vast back catalogue. In 1995 he had set up Sporty’s Studio in Miami, patronized by a number of top reggae performers including the Wailers Band. He is married to the US singer Betty Wright, noted for her R&B hits ‘Clean Up Woman’ and ‘Shoorah Shoorah’, as well as for her tour with the Bob Marley And The Wailers in the 70s.
