Garsi was a superb lutenist and composer who studied in Rome. His reputation quickly grew and he was called to Parma in service to Duke Ranuccio I at the Farnese court. Forty-five compositions, at least, were written by Garsi (including two for keyboard), primarily for the lute. His style was conservative and the settings were predominantly dances.
