Biography

Jin Hi Kim studied komungo -- a zither of six silk strings most often used for meditation of male Confucian scholars -- at an early age, breaking tradition where most girls study kayagum, a brighter, more popular zither. Kim studied at Seoul National University and electronic music and composition at Mills College. Kim has worked with Derek Bailey, Bill Frisell, Oliver Lake, Elliott Sharp, and Eugene Chadbourne and is a co-founder of the No World Improvisations quartet. Kim designed an electric version of komungo and a MIDI-version of changgo, a Korean percussion instrument, in collaboration with Danny Ferrington. Kim has collaborated on computer music works won several awards and commissions.
