As singer/songwriters, Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida have earned nearly every accolade Canada can bestow. But ask them what their greatest success has been and they’ll tell you it’s their 20-year marriage and three sons. They will also readily admit that maintaining that bond has been a struggle at times. Their advantage is the ability to make music together, which led them to establish a new shared artistic identity, MOON VS SUN, and create I’m Going To Break Your Heart, an 11-track album, documentary film and more, which presents Raine and Chantal as no one has ever seen or heard before. After several years of recording under their own roof, in 2018 the couple decided to finish the project as far away from any distractions as possible. Their destination was the French island of Saint Pierre et Miquelon off the south coast of Newfoundland where they completed the bulk of the album and film, and also ultimately reconnected under the extremely isolated conditions. The results are a powerful exploration of what it means to be in a long-term committed relationship, and also—as heard on the album’s anthemic first single “Lowlight”—the joy and strength that ultimately comes out of surviving the dark times. As partners in both life and music, Raine and Chantal are constantly seeking to conjure magic together. I’m Going To Break Your Heart is the most vivid example yet of how they are able to do it—bouncing off each other’s light, just like moon vs. sun.
