Biography

For over two decades, Paul Burch's modern vision of American roots music has attracted fans and collaborators from punk to honky tonk. Burch's new LP, Light Sensitive (2020) was produced with longtime T-Bone Burnett collaborator Dennis Crouch and offers a dozen parables about living in the modern south. The album was recorded with Burch's longtime band the WPA Ballclub featuring Fats Kaplin with guests Luther Dickinson, Robyn Hitchcock, Amy Rigby, and Aaron Lee Tasjan. Burch’s work with a wide range of artists including Ralph Stanley, Lambchop, Vic Chesnutt, R&B legend Candi Staton, Mark Knopfler, and the Waco Brothers is as unclassifiable as it is instantly classic. "I'm a Paul Burch fan. How could I not be?" wrote Peter Guralnick, author of biographies of Sam Phillips, Elvis Presley, and Sam Cooke. "How many other contemporary artists have forged a body of work of such cleverness and coherence, careful craftsmanship and white-hot heat, with all the zeal of the most dedicated student and all the passion of a true original? His music never fails to achieve its purpose, what Sun Records founder Sam Phillips has deemed the unequivocal purpose of every kind of music: to lift up, to deepen, to intensify the spirit of audience and musicians alike. "
