Funck composed in all mediums relevant to suites and was considered a virtuoso on the violin, viola da gamba, guitar and clavichord. He was a Kantor at Reichenbach, studied at Jena University, was secreatry to the Duchess Eleonore of Holstein-Norburg, taught keyboard and was the organist at a girls' school. "Stricturae viola di gambicae, ex sonatis, ariis, intradis, allemandis" was a collection of numerous pieces arranged for four gambas given equal treatment. Collectively the arrangements explored the full three-octave range of the gamba through a limitation of each part. The music was written for counterpoint.
