Biography

Mauricio Tapajós Gomes (27-12-1943 / 21-04-95) was born in Rio de Janeiro, the son of Paulo Tapajós, a musician who would greatly influence his career. Maurício spent his childhood attending Rádio Nacional, where his father was a radio broadcaster, singer, director and producer of several programs. His first recorded composition was “Carro de boi”, in partnership with the poet Cacaso. Soon he would develop with him and another poet, Herminio Bello de Carvalho, the popular opera “João-Amor e Maria”. He also signed the Musical Direction for many other plays. We will meet him as a political activist after the military coup of 1964, and in 1973 he became one of the founders of Sombrás - Sociedade Musical Brasileira. His musical partners were: Aldir Blanc, Cacaso, Capinam, Clara Nunes, Délcio Carvalho, Eduardo Gudin, Elton Medeiros, Eugênio Monteiro, Guinga, Herminio Bello de Carvalho, Ivan Lins, João Nogueira, Mauricio Carrilho, Mauro Duarte, Miltinho (MPB4) , Mirabô Dantas, Nei Lopes, Nelson Cavaquinho, Nelson Motta, Nelson Sargento, Paulo César Pinheiro, Paulinho Tapajós, Paulo Emílio, Sidney Miller and Suely Costa. In 1978, he produced, scripted and directed, the show/LP “Transversal do Tempo”, by Elis Regina. Recorded two LP's. "Olha aí!" (1980) and "Aldir Blanc and Maurício Tapajós" (1984). He was a producer, director, screenwriter, musician, broadcaster, President of AMAR-Sombrás and very active throughout his life. He died of a heart attack at the age of 51.
