The Last of the Great Troubadours: The...

Biography

Riquier is generally thought to be the last troubadour. He served in the courts of Amalrich IV, Alfonso X, King of Castile, and Henry II, Count of Rodez. He was also an advocate for troubadour's rights. More than half of his works survive, forming a remarkable record of the end of the era of court singing. The songs are monophonic with no repeating verses, a characteristic of the works of the time. Riquier was an artist who was proud of his achievements as is evidenced by his notes attesting to his skills contained in his works.
