Vømmøl Spellmannslag is a Norwegian folk-pop group that was active for a couple years during the mid-'70s and proved remarkably successful, especially from a commercial standpoint. Founded in 1973 in Trøndelag, Norway, by singer/songwriter Hans Rotmo (also known as the alias Kristian Schravlevold; born March 10, 1948), the band is additionally comprised of Hans Løkken (aka Konrad Vømmølbakken; mandolin), Geir Solheim (aka Peder Storvømmølvold; guitar), and Leiv Prestvik (aka Birger Skruddusvingen; bass). In the mid-'70s, Vømmøl Spellmannslag released a pair of tremendously popular albums, Vömmöl'n (1974) and Vömlingen (1975), and a couple singles "Hølverivisa" (1974) and "Telefonsentralmontørene" (1975). Vömmöl'n spent 43 consecutive weeks in the Top Ten of the Norwegian albums chart, peaking at number two, while Vömlingen hit number one. In the aftermath of this remarkable success, Rotmo put Vømmøl Spellmannslag aside and formed a new band, Arbeidslaget Hass K. Vømmølbakken, with which he released another pair of albums, Grovarbeid (1976) and Varsko Her! (1976). The albums failed to rival the success of Vømmøl Spellmannslag, however, and Rotmo proceeded to form yet another band, Heimevernslaget, with which he released a few albums during the late '70s. In the early '80s he released a couple solo albums and adopted the alias Ola Uteligger for a few others during the second half of the decade. In 1984, ten years after the release of the band's full-length debut, Vømmøl Spellmannslag reunited for the release of a new album, Vömmölåret (1984). It was a Top Ten hit and led to the release of the retrospective compilation Vømmøl Special (1985). Other best-of compilations followed in later years, among them Vømmøltoppen (1989) and the chart-topping Vømmølmusikken (1996). In commemoration of its 25th anniversary, Vömmöl'n, the band's debut album, was reissued in 2009 and was once again a Top Ten hit. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
