Biography

A full-time bassist for A Cor do Som, Os Novos Baianos, Barão Vermelho, Caetano Veloso, and Marisa Monte, as a session musician Dadi also recorded for Mick Jagger, Elba Ramalho, Chico Buarque, Moraes Moreira, and MPB-4, among many others. Caetano Veloso dedicated to him the suggestive "Leãozinho." Dadi, a self-taught musician, started to play the guitar and the electric bass at 13. A little later, with friends he formed the amateur band the Goofies, which played parties in the neighborhood. At 18 he became a professional as bassist for the Os Novos Baianos, from 1970 to 1975. In the latter year, he accompanied Mick Jagger on the recording of "Scarlet," on PolyGram. From 1975 to 1978 he participated in Jorge Ben's Banda do Zé Pretinho and Admiral Jorge V. In 1977, he, his brother Mú Carvalho, Armandinho, and Gustavo formed the group A Cor do Som, dissolved in 1987 and regrouped in 1994. In 1990 he replaced Dé in the Barão Vermelho, with which he played until 1992. In this year he was invited to join Caetano Veloso's band. Dadi participated in the show Circuladô, which yielded the live CD Circuladô Ao Vivo and an international tour. After 1996 he became a regular member of Marisa Monte's band, recording the albums Barulhinho Bom (1996) and Memórias, Crônicas e Declarações de Amor (2000). ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
