Biography

b. 29 September 1941, Barnet, Hertfordshire, England. In the early 60s Griffiths began a long association with Mike Westbrook, playing trombone in his band. Around this time he also studied at the London College of Music. During the years with Westbrook he also played in several other bands including a brief spell with Buddy Rich, long-lasting associations with John Surman and Stan Tracey, and he was in at the start of Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood Of Breath. He also led his own bands and developed a parallel career as a studio musician. In 1994 he was reunited with Surman, appearing on Surman and John Warren’s The Brass Project. In considerable demand for his technical skills, Griffiths has always shown himself to be eager in all that he does to push against the sometimes restricting envelope of jazz.
