Born Candy Mosekedi Mokwena and widely known as Candy Tsamandebele, this amazing vocal prowess was born in a musical family at Ga- Sedibeng village, Bolobedu, a village under the revered Rain Queen Modjadji’s leadership in the Limpopo Province. Musically colourful as her name suggests, Candy was affected by her cultural upbringing and has been interested in music for as long as she could remember. Her musical career started after she was initiated into her mother’s traditional music group known as Khekhapa in Bolobedu. According to the elders in the village, Khekhapa was first created in the region to serve as a platform to teach and instil cultural values - through song and dance. For Khekhapa to come alive, songs were composed with just drums, vocals and choreography to produce rich and distinguished sound that could be identified specifically to the Balobedu people. Here, Candy learned about her ancestry from a tender age of 14. Her mother, who was the group leader and the percussionist of the act, made sure Candy was always presentable with the right attire and matching beads during performances, the tradition which she still carries today. “I am an African woman, a sister and daughter of the soil, my roots are embedded in me, myself and my attire are an expression of the world. …my beads and my clothes tell my story and my hair is not only for the sake of fashion, but carries a message about our culture from the times of Abysnnia.” - Candy.
