Biography

SVT, the most mainstream San Francisco club band of the late '70s and early '80s, made waves with their extraordinary lineup featuring legendary bassist Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. When Hot Tuna went on hiatus, Casady and ex-Hot Tuna keyboardist Nick Buck embarked on a quest for fresh musical talent. They discovered Airplay, a Marin County gem led by singer/guitarist Brian Marnell and drummer Bill Gibson. An in-person introduction sparked a musical connection, giving birth to the Jack Casady Band, later rebranded as SVT. Signing with Howie Klein's 415 Records, their debut single "Heart of Stone" became a hit on local FM station KSAN, an unprecedented feat for an indie band. The band's anthemic pop songs and raw energy brought comparisons to The Clash. After Buck's departure in '81, SVT continued as a trio, producing "No Regrets" before Marnell's untimely passing in 1983. Casady remains a true legend on bass, while Buck and Zahl pursued other endeavors. Buck played a vital role in preserving SVT's legacy with "Always Comes Back - The Authorized Recordings" and "The Price of Sex." SVT's influence and unique blend of passion and musical acumen continue to resonate, leaving an indelible mark on music enthusiasts worldwide.
