Acclaimed around the world as one of the best interpreters of Frédéric Chopin, Arthur Moreira Lima also had success in the field of popular music. At nine, he won a solo contest promoted by the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira with a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composition. He won the contest again in 1952, interpreting a Ludwig van Beethoven piece. In 1956 he won a Rádio MEC contest, winning a scholarship from the Brazilian government to study in Paris, France, with Marguerite Long. In 1962 he won third place in the III International Piano Contest (Rio de Janeiro), being invited to work as the assistant to Professor Rudolf Keres at the Moscow Conservatory (then the U.S.S.R.A.), a position that he held for the next three years. In 1965 he won second place at the Frédéric Chopin International Contest (Warsaw, Poland). Returning to Moscow, Moreira Lima continued his studies until 1970, when he moved to Vienna, Austria, and started his acknowledged career as an international concerto player. His activities in popular music included a celebrated mid-'70s English recording of Ernesto Nazareth's works (Nazareth being himself deeply influenced by Chopin); the no less important association with Elomar, Heraldo do Monte, and Paulo Moura in the ConSertão series; and his performances and recordings with Rafael Rabelo, Época de Ouro, Nelson Gonçalves, and Ney Matogrosso.
