With a long history, founded in 1944 by Eduard Toldrà, the OBC is currently an instrument committed to the great symphonic repertoire, Catalan musical heritage and new creation; a speaker of musical modernity in southern Europe with a strong social commitment and strongly rooted in his city. In the 2022-2023 season, the orchestra embarked in a new era, with Ludovic Morlot as the new Principal Conductor. Throughout its history, the OBC has been directed by such outstanding conductors as Sergiu Celibidache, Valeri Gergiev, Christopher Hogwood, Mariss Jansons, Jesús López Cobos, Witold Lutosławski, Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropóvich, Kent Nagano or Heitor Villa-Lobos, among others. The orchestra regularly collaborates with the great artists of the international scene, such as Lang Lang, Janine Jansen, Mischa Maisky, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Arcadi Volodos, Vilde Frang, Pinchas Zukerman, Martha Argerich, Steven Isserlis, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Renaud Capuçon, Yuja Wang, Khatia Buniatishvili and Hilary Hahn, among many others. His commitment to new creation has led him to commission commissions from the most prominent national and international creators, such as Hèctor Parra, Thomas Adès, Olga Neuwirth, Luca Francesconi, David Lang or Cassandra Miller .
