Biography

Thy Grief Eternal was an extremely short-lived British death/doom band whose strikingly morbid name should, by all rights, have been forgotten long ago, were it not for the group's eventual transformation into the notorious "heaviest band in the universe," Electric Wizard, a few years later. Established in 1991 by vocalist and guitarist Jus Oborn, from the ashes of an earlier band named Lord of Putrefaction, Thy Grief Eternal was rounded out by second guitarist Gavin Gillingham, bassist Dave Pedge, and drummer James Evans. And after opening for Cathedral at London's Marquee Club, the quartet was taken under the wing of their frontman Lee Dorrian, who financed the recording of three tracks intended for inclusion on his Dark Passages doom compilation. But this never came to pass, and while waiting for the opportunity to record additional material for an eventual album release, Thy Grief Eternal underwent a significant stylistic transformation and change of personnel, which prompted a name shortening to simply Eternal in 1993. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
