Biography

Wageble are one of Senegal’s best-known hip hop acts, and have won fans worldwide with their powerful performances and captivating lyricism. Fronted by Eyewitness and Waterflow, the group began their musical journey more than 20 years ago in the ghettos of Dakar. Taking the moniker the Voice of the Voiceless, their mission is, and always has been, to represent the disenfranchised youth of Senegal and Africa as a positive and formidable force. Delving deep into their musical and cultural heritage, Wagëblë draw on the tradition of the griot - a Senegalese storyteller, oral historian and social critic. Their lyrics are unapologetically defiant and take aim at social injustice, political corruption and outdated tradition in the name of leveling the social landscape. Through their music Wagëblë spread a message of hope, change and self-determination, encouraging the youth of Africa to build a better world for themselves, rather than dream of life in the West. 
 In Wolof, Wagëblë means “from the ghetto,” but is also an acronym for Wax Aduna Gëddu Ëttu Baatin Lemu Ëlëk – an expression of the group’s philosophy to speak truth, spread knowledge and lead the way to a brighter and more positive future in the Motherland, and beyond. After contributing to six hip hop compilations, Wagëblë teamed up with Norwegian manager Fred Russel and producer Tom Roger for their debut album, Wagëb’ Rap New Generation in Sénégal in 2003.
