Julia Kent is a New York City-based cellist and composer. A Canadian native, Kent was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. She studied cello at Indiana University in Bloomington, then relocated to New York City, where she joined Melora Creager's pioneering cello group Rasputina. After leaving Rasputina, she became a member of the Mercury Prize–winning Antony and the Johnsons. Kent released her debut solo album, Delay, in 2007. The album showcased looped cello, electronics, and field recordings in a series of deeply melodic compositions of astonishing detail and arrangement. Kent's second full-length, Green and Grey, was issued in 2011 on Important Records. She moved to UK label Leaf for two subsequent solo records: Character (2015) and Asperities (2017). In addition to recording and touring as a solo artist, Julia Kent composes film scores and music for dance and theatre.
