Biography

The co-founder of the historical performance ensemble La Rêveuse, lutenist and theorbist Benjamin Perrot has also appeared with Ensemble Vocal Sagittarius, Le Poème Harmonique, and other early music groups. With La Rêveuse, he has accumulated a large recording catalog over two decades. Perrot studied at the Conservatoire National Régional in Paris, taking lute, theorbo, and Baroque guitar classes with Eric Bellocq and Claire Antonini. He graduated in 1997, earning the Diplôme Supérieur de Musique Ancienne, and went on for further studies with Pascal Monteilhet. During the 1996-1997 season, he also served as a trainee accompanist at the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. Perrot soon found himself in high demand with France's leading Baroque groups, performing for some years as a freelancer with such ensembles as Capriccio Stravagante, La Fenice, and Le Poème Harmonique. He has generally been oriented toward chamber music but has also performed with orchestral and vocal groups such as Les Arts Florissants and Le Concert Spirituel. Perrot made his recording debut as a theorbist in 2002 on a Le Concert Spirituel album devoted to Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Leçons de Ténèbres. Two years later, he was heard with Les Pages du Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles on another Charpentier album, this one of the Vêpres de Saint Louis. The year 2004 also saw the founding of the ensemble La Rêveuse by Perrot and viola da gamba player Florence Bolton. Both musicians retained leadership of the group as of the early 2020s. The group devotes itself to music of the 17th and 18th centuries, mostly from France and England, and its membership varies according to the music being performed. La Rêveuse released its first album, featuring violin sonatas by Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, in 2010 on the Mirare label. The group continued to record for Mirare, moving to Harmonia Mundi in 2021 for the album Louis de Caix d'Hervelois: Dans le Sillage de Marin Marais. Perrot is the co-creator, with the actor and director Benjamin Lazar, of the stage production L'Autre Monde, ou Les Estats & Empires de la Lune. In 2023, La Rêveuse released the album Le Concert des Oiseaux on Harmonia Mundi. Perrot is on the faculty at the Conservatoire de Versailles and is a vocal coach at the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. ~ James Manheim, Rovi
