Biography

The music created by Austin, Texas-based analog electronic quartet S U R V I V E is a fresh, bewildering update of vintage horror and sci-fi film scores as well as experimental ambient music and minimal wave. Their recorded output ranges from longform space explorations to hazy lo-fi electro. Their stunning concerts are momentous occasions, and they have shared the stage with Goblin, Xeno & Oaklander, Lightning Bolt, and many others. The group was founded in 2009 by Adam Jones (Troller, Thousand Foot Whale Claw), Kyle Dixon, Mark Donica, and Michael Stein, all prominent members of Austin's highly productive synthesizer community. The group's debut EP, LLR002, appeared on local label Light Lodge in 2010 and was quickly followed by the self-released cassette s000 (later reissued by Holodeck as HD009) and LT019 (on Living Tapes) in 2011. The 7" single "W115" appeared on Italian label To Lose La Track in 2012, and S U R V I V E's self-titled debut LP arrived on Mannequin Records shortly after. The album instantly gained a cult following, selling out several pressings over the next few years as the band's reputation grew. The 12" EP MF064 appeared on another Austin-based label, Monofonus Press, in 2014. The group contributed two songs to the soundtrack of the 2014 action thriller The Guest, which was released as a limited double-LP on Record Store Day in 2016. Dixon and Stein composed music for the Netflix sci-fi/horror series Stranger Things (starring Winona Ryder), which instantly received an enormous amount of acclaim when its first season was released in July of 2016. During the same month, it was announced that S U R V I V E had signed to Relapse Records for the release of their second full-length, RR7349, which arrived the following September. A year later, Dixon and Stein's Stranger Things theme won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music. RR7387, featuring remixes of RR7349 material by artists including Justin Broadrick and Lena Willikens, appeared in November of 2017. Another single, "RR7400," followed in 2018. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
