Berlin-based James Ginzburg is an artist and musician whose work has encompassed experimental electronic music and art production (emptyset, bleed turquoise), folk music (Faint WIld Light), film and film score and extensive dance music production. James Ginzburg is one half of emptyset (Thrill Jockey, raster-noton and Subtext), a project formed in 2005 with Paul Purgas and which examines the material properties of sound and its correspondence with architecture, performance and physical modes of production. emptyset have produced works and installations for the David Roberts Art Foundation, Tate Britain and V&A Museum, and presented live performances with Unsound, CTM/Transmediale, Kunsthalle Zurich and Sonic Acts among others. James has also explored dance music under a number of guises (most notably Ginz), and contributed to the international expansion of Dubstep through the labels Subtext recordings and Tectonic recordings he founded with electronic musician Pinch in 2004. He currently runs Multiverse, a network of labels (Subtext, Arc Light Editions), publishing company and studio that focuses on experimental and contemporary electronic music in contexts ranging from boutique underground releases to major studio film scores.
