Biography

The Münchner Rundfunkorchester was founded in 1952 and in the over sixty-five years which followed it advanced to a position as an ensemble with a wide ranging artistic spectrum. Concert performances of operas with outstanding singers at the Sunday Concerts, and the “Paradisi gloria” series with 20th and 21st century sacred music are just as much a part of its activities as are children’s and young people’s concerts with accompanying educational programs, entertaining theme programs under the title: “Wednesdays at 7:30” or performances of music from film scores. The Chief Conductors of the Münchner Rundfunkorchester have included Kurt Eichhorn, Giuseppe Patane, Roberto Abbado and Marcello Viotti. From 2006 to 2017, Ulf Schirmer serves as Artistic Director of the orchestra. This position was taken over by Ivan Repušic´ in autumn 2017. Guest performances have taken the orchestra to venues such as the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Vienna Musikverein, as well as to festivals including the Kissinger Summer and the Festival of Nations, and the orchestra has recently performed together with artists including Diana Damrau, Leo Nucci, Klaus Florian Vogt, Mischa Maisky and Fazıl Say. The Münchner Rundfunkorchester is well known for regularly bringing unjustly neglected works to light, and is also famed for its large number of CD recordings. At the Salzburg Festival it has accompanied among others Juan Diego Florez, Rolando Villazon and Placido Domingo.
