Biography

ARBOR is a new jazz quartet born from the collaboration between Greek guitarist Michalis Tsiftsis and bassist Yiannis Vagianos. The two met in 2022 at the Franco Ambrosetti Jazz Awards, where they took first and second prizes respectively. Their immediate connection sparked a journey of musical exploration, culminating in the formation of ARBOR and the release of their debut album. Inspired by the Latin word for “tree,” ARBOR stands as a tribute to nature, its resilience, and the environmental challenges our world faces. ARBOR’s music reflects on the recent wildfires that have devastated Greece and regions worldwide, channeling this urgency into compositions that blend jazz with ambient and contemporary elements. Tsiftsis and Vagianos bring a dynamic interplay of thoughtful improvisation and innovative composition, evoking the complexity and depth of the natural landscapes that inspire them. Their sound moves from modern jazz’s energetic drive to ambient expanses, creating a space for reflection and immersion. Joining Tsiftsis and Vagianos are two exceptional musicians: pianist Yiannis Papadopoulos and drummer Nick Thessalonikefs, whose talents add layers of emotion and depth to the group’s music. Each member contributes a unique voice, weaving a rich tapestry that transcends traditional jazz boundaries. ARBOR’s music is a heartfelt response to the fragility of our planet—a call to appreciate and protect our shared environment through art and sound.
