b. Alfred Antonius Josef Haurand, 15 November 1943, Viersen, Germany. Haurand learned the double bass and percussion at school and played in amateur dixieland bands as a teenager. He studied music at Volkswangschule, Essen (1965-71) and while he was there had his own trio. In 1970 he started the group Third Eye which survived into the mid-80s despite personnel changes. In 1977 he joined the European Jazz Quintet. In 1978 with Alan Skidmore and Tony Oxley he formed SOH which is sometimes enlarged to a quartet with the addition of Kenny Wheeler or John Surman. With Oxley’s propulsive drumming, Haurand’s mobile, assertive bass playing combines to provide a formidable rhythm section. Between 1977 and 1980 he worked with the Hungarian clarinettist Lajos Dudas. He formed the Quintet with Joachim Kuhn and Enrico Rava in 1985.
