Biography

b. 28 February 1910, Russia, d. 24 December 1987, Los Angeles, California, USA. A popular composer from the 40s to the late 50s, mostly for movies, Myrow was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Conservatory of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. He graduated as an accomplished pianist, and served as a guest soloist with several symphony orchestras, including those of Cleveland and Philadelphia. After working as musical director for some Philadelphia radio stations, Myrow started composing for nightclub revues in cities on the east coast. His early songs in the late 30s included ‘Haunting Me’, ‘Overheard In A Cocktail Lounge’, ‘The Fable Of The Rose’ and ‘I Love To Watch The Moonlight’. In the early 40s he wrote ‘Autumn Nocturne’ (a big hit for Claude Thornhill) and ‘Velvet Moon’. In 1946, he and Eddie De Lange contributed several songs to the movie If I’m Lucky. In the same year, Myrow began what was to be a 10-year association with lyricist Mack Gordon. Together they wrote eight songs for Three Little Girls In Blue, including ‘Somewhere In The Night’, ‘Always A Lady’, ‘On The Boardwalk In Atlantic City’ and ‘You Make Me Feel So Young’; the latter eventually became indelibly linked with Frank Sinatra. From 1947-50 the team provided the songs for four movies starring Betty Grable, including Mother Wore Tights (‘Kokomo, Indiana’, ‘There’s Nothing Like A Song’ and ‘You Do’, which was nominated for an Academy Award, and became a hit for Dinah Shore and Vaughn Monroe), When My Baby Smiles At Me (‘By The Way’ and ‘What Did I Do?’), The Beautiful Blonde From Bashville Bend (‘Every Time I Meet You’) and Wabash Avenue (‘Baby Won’t You Say You Love Me’ and ‘Wilhelmina’, which was also nominated for an Oscar). Myrow and Gordon continued into the 50s with The I-Don’t-Care Girl (‘This Is My Favorite City’); I Love Melvin starring Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds (‘A Lady Loves’, ‘Where Did You Learn To Dance?’ and ‘There You Are’); and Bundle Of Joy, in which Reynolds appeared with husband Eddie Fisher. Myrow also contributed several numbers to The French Line, with Ralph Blane (‘Comment Allez-Vous?’, ‘What Is This I Feel?’, ‘Well, I’ll Be Switched’ and ‘Wait Till You See Paris’). His other compositions included ‘Five O’Clock Whistle’ (a hit for Glenn Miller, Erskine Hawkins and Ella Fitzgerald); ‘It Happens Every Spring’ (movie title song), ‘Endless Love’, ‘Love Is Eternal’, ‘Five Four Blues’, ‘Soft And Warm’, ‘Three Quarter Blues’ and ‘Someday Soon’. His other collaborators included Kim Gannon, Jean Stone and Bickley Reichner. Myrow died of Parkinson’s disease in 1987.
